The rise of Chinese-language films brings with it a trend of popular film genres that have taken over China by storm – Comedy Fantasy, Romance, High School and Inspirational genres.
With smashing box office figures in China during the lunar new year period, Hong Kong style movies have been fighting for top spots at the box office. Why are these films so popular and successful? Chen Han shares the screenwriting techniques of writing films with Hong Kong-specific elements.

CURRENT TRENDS – DEVELOPING AND WRITING FOR
CHINESE FILMS
With the rising popularity of Chinese-language films, there has been an influx of the variety of genre films and independent films produced. In a time where anyone and everyone can produce films, how do we accurately judge the potential of a film project? How can we go beyond the limitations of words and geographical boundaries and reassemble a screenplay and the writing process? Be it whether it’s a comedy, wuxia or an art film, the only uniting factor that can connect audiences is the cultural experience. Good stories, inspire good screenplays, and are produced into good movies.

FROM TELEVISION TO COMMERCIAL FILMS: DEVELOPMENT, CREATIVITY & MARKETING
– A CASE STUDY OF "OUR TIMES"
Every weekend, we stay rooted to a small screen, growing up with characters from television series. These are the warmest memories from our youth. Years later, this same feeling of nostalgia returns to us through the big screen. We’ve all grown up, leaving the television sets in our living rooms for the big screens in the cinemas. The journey of developing an idea, to selling and marketing it; this is a path down memory lane, back to our best times. We’re crossing back and forth between reality and memories, yet the only constant is a good story, a good script.

WRITING A SCREENPLAY DOESN'T MAKE YOU A SCREENWRITER – THE ART OF STORYTELLING
It’s not difficult to become a screenwriter. The fundamentals and theories are easy to understand. Once you learn them and put it to good practice, writing a screenplay isn’t a difficult task. However, not everyone can become a good screenwriter. Theories are not everything, talent and creativity are also key requisites. One cannot depend on constant practice and writing scripts. There is no formula to becoming a good screenwriter, but one thing is for sure – One must have the mindful awareness of a life-changing experience.
